Jilted woman throws acid at boyfriend

NEW DELHI: Angered that her boyfriend broke off their five-year-old relationship after promising to marry her, a 25-year-old BA graduate allegedly threw acid on her boyfriend’s face in east Delhi on Sunday afternoon. The victim, Vineet (27), was rushed to Hedgewar Hospital where he was admitted with serious burn injuries on his face and later referred to Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital, said police.

The accused, Aarti Dikshit, has been arrested for voluntarily causing grievous hurt, said police. “The incident was reported in Anand Vihar around 12.30pm. The couple had gone to Cross River Mall to watch a movie. When they did not get tickets, they decided to go home. The couple had an argument and later, while Vineet was leaving, Aarti took out a bottle containing acid from her purse and threw acid on his face,” said Asif Mohammed Ali, additional deputy commissioner of police (east).

Police said Aarti had asked to meet Vineet at the mall and when they did not get movie tickets, the couple spent time at the food court instead, talking for almost two hours. “There had been some problems between the two and an argument broke out once Vineet told Aarti that he could not marry her as his parents had objected to the match. This angered Aarti who had come prepared as the acid bottle was already in her bag. When Vineet was leaving, she called him back. As she approached his motorcycle, Aarti took out the bottle and threw acid on his face,” said a senior police officer.

A howling Vineet drew a crowd and a PCR van rushed him to the hospital. Vineet is yet to give a statement to police as he has not regained consciousness. Cops said he was out of immediate danger. “He is currently admitted with 40 per cent burn injuries on his face. Aarti was later arrested from near Surajmal Vihar,” said a senior police officer.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the two had known each other for the past five years and had studied together in College of Art, Tilak Nagar, said police.

Vineet, a resident of Maujpur, is a sculptor and runs a business of selling idols with his father. Aarti, a resident of Yamuna Vihar, was searching for a job, said police.
