Man alleges torture by police
A man was allegedly tortured by the police after his wife lodged a dowry harassment complaint against him.
N. Padmanabham of Kranti Nagar, Hanumanthawaka, was employed as a private bus driver. He married Varalakshmi five years ago. The couple has two children . Padmanabham goes on long trips as part of his job and stays away from home for days on end. He suspected that his wife was having an affair with another person and filed a divorce petition in the Family Court six months ago. The case is pending in court.
Meanwhile, his wife lodged a dowry harassment complaint against Padmanabham at the Arilova Out Post on Monday evening. The victim alleged that SI Parthasarathy and six constables beat him with lathis after he refused to withdraw the divorce petition. He approached the Visakha Poura Hakkula Sangham and its president N.H. Akbar took him to the King George Hospital for treatment.
A medico legal case was registered and X-rays and tests had confirmed that the victim was badly injured, Mr. Akbar told the media on Tuesday. He said that the sangham would stage a dharna opposite the P.M. Palem Police Station along with dalits on Wednesday morning to protest against the ‘police brutality’. He demanded suspension of the SI and the constables who were involved in beating the victim.
