Family charged with demanding dowry

MOHALI: Trying to force out Rs 15 lakh in cash as dowry from the family of the bride-to-be proved to be costly for a Mohali-based family as on Monday they were booked under sections 420 and 498A of IPC on the complaint of the girl’s brother.

A day earlier they had decided not to let the marriage rituals commence till their demand for money was met.

According to police officials at the Balongi police station, the girl’s brother, Rajesh, a resident of Industrial Area, Phase-II, in Chandigarh, had complained that the groom, Sumit Kohli, and his family, including mother Veena Kohli, father Jaspal Kohli, sister Ritu and brother-in-law Kalicharan, all residents of Phase X in Mohali, were allegedly demanding dowry and threatening to take the groom away from the venue before the marriage could be solemnized.

Speaking to TOI, Balongi station house officer Palwinder Singh said that the girl’s brother told them that apart from demanding Rs 15 lakh in dowry, the family had also demanded that the to-be groom be sent to Australia and that the girl?s family should pay for entire cost involved in moving to Australia.

Meanwhile, the boy’s family alleged that since they had been promised the money by the girl’s family before the date of marriage, they were well within their rights to demand money. They said that they were not demanding any dowry.
