2 given 13-yr RI for abetting suicide

BIJAPUR: The first fast-track court sentenced two persons to 13 years rigorous imprisonment and Rs 50,000 fine each for instigating the suicide of a woman.

The accused are Ishwar Subhash Kumbar and his paramour Indirabai Kuntoji. Due to mental torture, Ishwar’s wife Basalingamma killed herself on September 17, 2006 at Arakeri village in Bijapur. Ishwar had an extramarital relationship with Indirabai Kuntoji for five years.

Bijapur rural police registered the case and filed a chargesheet in the court. The verdict stated that, under Section 498(A) of 34 IPC, both the accused would be asked to serve 10 years rigorous imprisonment and Rs 25,000 fine each. Under section 306(A) of 334 IPC, 3 years rigorous imprisonment and Rs 25,000 fine to each. The fine amount will be given to Basalingamma’s parents.

After verifying the documents and hearings, Judge V B Suryavamshi gave the verdict. Public prosecutor V G Hagaragund pleaded before the court on behalf of government.
