CM’s confidant appears in HC: Dowry Death case

Chief minister B S Yeddyurappa’s confidant and MLC Lehar Singh appeared before the high court on Monday and submitted his objections in response to non-bailable warrants (NBWs) issued to him and his family.

The NBWs were issued on December 2 by a division bench comprising Justices K Sreedhar Rao and K N Keshavanarayana to Lehar Singh, his wife Shanti Bai and sons Deepak Kumar and Sanjay Kumar. A lower court had acquitted them in a dowry death case in January, and Sanjaynagar police had appealed against it in the high court in June. The case pertains to the death of Singh’s daughter-in-law in 2000.

The HC has ordered that the four will be discharged after executing a bond for Rs 1 lakh each within 10 days before the trial court.

Singh, state BJP treasurer, told Bangalore Mirror, “I came to know of the NBW through the media. I have requested the court to provide me with the details of the grounds for the warrant.” He said, “We were acquitted by the lower court on the grounds of lack of evidence and witnesses. But some persons are trying to implicate me as I am close to the chief minister.”

Singh has been accused by JD(S) leader H D Revanna of being the CM’s “liaison officer” and being instrumental in the Bellary steel project deal struck by the state government with steel baron Lakshmi Mittal at the recent global investors’ meet.
